On February 22, 2021, the Italian Ambassador of Congo, Luca Attanasio, lost his life after being attacked during a convoy. In the attack the carabineer Vittorio Iacovacci, and the driver Mustapha Milambo were also killed.
This assault appears to be the result of an attempted kidnapping of UN personnel. In the convoy there were two vehicles and 7 people of the World Food Programme among which there was also the Head of the EU Delegation.
The two vehicles were heading from Goma to Rutshuru with the task of inspecting a WFP program that had as its objective the distribution of food in schools. According to investigations carried out by the local police, at first there was an attack on the convoy in which the driver was killed, then the officer and the ambassador were taken into the forest where they were shot just before the arrival of local forces. From what has been reconstructed, the people responsible for the ambush belong to the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda. Moreover, the WFP states that the road covered by the convoy was considered safe and practicable even without the help of an escort.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time that a similar event takes place: the French ambassador Philippe Bernard was also killed in 1993 during the clashes in Kinshasa caused by the raising of troops opposed to the dictator Mobuti Sese Seke.
